I hope your student feels like an expert on Chicken Embryology and the Life Cycle. They have now experienced what it's like to raise and hatch chicks, as well as done lots of research and note taking on the subject. They have all completed a book (their "research project") that will be coming home shortly. I am always amazed how much knowledge the kids gain from this experience- they enjoy it and so do I!

Rock Classifying
We did a science unit on earth's changing surfaces. Included in this research was an in-depth study of rocks. We collected many from the playground and made lots of observations. Here they are studying the textures, weights, different colors, and trying to figure out which of the three different types of rocks their's might be.

lots to share!
Hi families,
First of all I want to say thank you to everyone who was able to meet with me at conference time. I really appreciate you taking the time to meet with me. I also love the chance to share with you how wonderful your kiddos are.
Next of course, is science. The mystery this time around was "How do rivers flow?" We used paper landscapes, ink to mark the ridges, and then sprayed water on them to see what would happen. Ask your kiddos about rivers and waters, they are experts!
Here are a few shots of our kiddos performing the play "The big red hen" with their junior drama club.
Finally, I want to say how grateful I am to my parent volunteers. Abi comes in to teach harvest of the month, this month being maple syrup. Rebecca and Solvieg also come in to teach Four Winds, which also revolved around maple trees and tapping them for maple syrup. It was a really fun month and experience.
Learning about the different tools and how to tap a Maple Tree.
Tree rubbings with Four Winds.
Tasting fresh sap, right from the tree!
Two kinds of sap, and of course our beautiful maple.
Thank you again, for all that you do! And happy spring!!

Big Kid Buddies
We are fortunate enough to have Mr. Roach's class as our big kid buddies. By now you know how much we love science, so we invited them down to share what we've been up to. We were challenged to think of an invention for a new type of glass. This glass is bouncy and stretchy! We shared our ideas and asked our buddies to come up with some too. It is so inspiring and sweet to see the age groups work together. They had great ideas; screen savers for phones and computers, trampoline, doors and safe houses, eye glasses, etc...

Therapy Dog🐶
We are so lucky to have Tracy in our lives. She has set up a special program for the second graders to have visits with a therapy dog. Our dog is named Meggie, her full name being Nutmeg. She will come every other Thursday and kids will take turns visiting with her. So far, we've had our initial meeting and it went beautifully. Meggie is the sweetest dog and the kids did a great job with her.

candy melting experiments!
We sure do love science!
Our latest problem is that our friend went to "Camp way too hot!" And ran out of candy on day two!! We want to send more, but don't want it to melt on the way. We know chocolate will definitely melt. So we tested Swedish Fish, Starburst and Gummies to see which wouldn't melt. And the winner is...

About Valentines Day
Hi Families, February 9, 2017
I just wanted to send home a quick note about Valentine’s Day. Mrs. Dimick and I ARE planning to do a small celebration on Tuesday, February 14, 2017. We ask that if your child decides to bring in cards, that they bring in one for EVERY student. I don’t see this being a problem in second grade and in our very kind class, but just keep this in mind. If they do not want to write one for everyone, they may not pass out any. Also, this is totally optional. Do not feel that your child has to participate. We will make the mailboxes at school, so please don’t worry about that. Lastly, if you would like to send in a treat (please think healthy so I don’t have children eating 20 cupcakes and sweets :), or a drink please let me know via email ASAP so we can plan accordingly. abissonnette@wsesu.org

Some healthy snack ideas:
Fruit and Vegetable Bouquet Use heart and floral-shaped cookie cutters to cut fresh fruits and vegetables such as melon and bell peppers. Fill green skewers with cut fruits and vegetables and arrange into a bouquet. Tie together with red and pink ribbons. Students may enjoy with low-fat yogurt, hummus, salsa or low-fat ranch!
Heart Sandwiches Have children create healthy sandwiches using whole grain bread and strawberry fruit spread. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out mini heart sandwiches.
Berry Yogurt Looking for a healthy and simple snack? Have students add fresh or dried strawberries, blackberries or raspberries to low-fat strawberry yogurt.

Fun Stuff!!
Be on the lookout on the GSS website for a video of our classes New Years Resolutions. Each kiddo chose something they wanted to learn, do more of, or get better at. Then they listed the three reasons why. It's quite precious. ** note that some students did not want to be in the video. I let them choose.**

Also, thank you to Brett Loch; Luna's dad, for coming in to talk to the class about what he does for work. We learned about oil rigs, traveling to cool places, and working hard to accomplish your goals.
If YOU would like to visit the class to share about your job, a hobby you have, or even to read us a story- email me :) we would love to have you.

Report Cards
Hello Wonderful Families-
Report cards went home with your students today! :) In the envelope you will find: an explanation of what the number ratings mean, a description of what we have learned so far, and the report card. I am asking that these come out of bags this weekend as this is important information. I am also asking that you return the envelopes to me so I can re-use them in the spring. Thank you!
If you have any questions, please let me know!

We love Science
Mad Hatter Experiment!
We are stuck on a desert island with only kitchen supplies to construct a hat that will keep us safe in the sun. We had to think about the materials: what properties would be helpful to absorb sweat, shade our eyes from the sun, and keep us from getting sunburns? Here's our results!

Winter Sports Started
We got so lucky and had a beautiful day for our first winter sports outing. I hope all of the students come home with fun stories from the day. As you can see, Miss Ali went cross country skiing- it was a new sport for me & I loved it!

Star of the Week
Information went home about Star of the Week in backpacks on Friday. Please check it out and hang it somewhere safe so your kiddo won't miss their turn! :)
Star of the Week!
Star of the Week is something I like to implement to get to know the students a little bit better, and to give them a time to shine! During your child’s scheduled week, s/he will be involved in a special activity each day. Attached is a “Star of the Week” Schedule, please take note of when it is your child’s turn.
Monday- Your child may bring in a “show and tell” item. I ask that you help them pick thoughtfully as I do not allow toys. Some ideas are: handmade projects or gifts, collections, awards, scrapbooks. These will be put on our “sharing shelf” for the day, and return home.
Tuesday- Your child may choose a special seat for the day. (bumpy cushion, pillow, different chair)
Wednesday- Your child may bring a book of their choosing to be shared. We have plenty of books at school they can choose from, too!
Thursday- Towards the end of the week, I always need help! The star of the week becomes my special helper for the day.
Friday- Please help your child choose a few pictures to share with the class (baby, family, vacation, pets). I like to hang these pictures up around the room and return them at the end of the year, so please be sure the pictures they choose are ok to stay at school.
